Being a sixteen year old school girl who always has an opinion it's hard for me to sit in silence when there's an issue i disagree with. I never thought i would be as dramatic as i was today over something that did not seem relevant to me (Keep reading and maybe i'll explain)
Every year schools in Birmingham attend the rotary meeting of debate, this is where schoolchildren put their views and questions to political party members. I think it was our school's first year of attending the rotary club debate forum. Now don't get me wrong i was very pleased and blah and blow but really to be honest their were only two reasons our school was invited:
1) Our school is not what you would call 'posh' in fact its in a distinctly rough area. So i think we were only put forward as a last resort.
2) All other school's there was grammer schools or about to become Academy schools. We were the only state school there, somehow i can't help thinkng it was to keep some sort of a balance. A pathetic attempt at proportional representation which wasn't exactlly proportionally representing at all.
Well we went into the council house and sat down while being eyeballed all the time by a bunch of grammer school kids in suits and such. We did not realise it was such a momentous occasion otherwise we would have bought autograph books. (Note the sarcasm) In fact i think one of the reasons i feel distinctly pleased is the fact that i didn't get excited at meeting ANY of the follwing people:
Patrick Burns- If you've never heard of him he's the political editor for BBC West Midlands and a down right ass with no deceny and the air of a self-important disillusioned gentleman who feels he is/was a cut above our particular school. Maybe it was because we didn't speak with a distinctly upper class accent. Maybe it was because we were asain. Maybe. But there's no question about the fact that he was an ass.
Gisela Stuart- Who apparently had some important meeting she tried her hardest to get out of 'but with all the attempts in the world she just couldn't' now i'm not one to complain when an MP actually wants to do some work but something tells me 4 hours with a bunch of school kids and conservative MP's doesn't exactly make you feel great, so she went of to try and change the world ![]()
The Conservatives didn't send the right MP to the question time so to make up for it they bought 2 MP'S in instead which is what most would say was typical of the tories. Doesn't bring in the most powerful but sends two diluted people instead but yet still it's always a pleasure to be reminded how slimy the conservatives are.
A woman MP from the Liberal Democrats who dissapeared halfway through also attended, though she wasn't as bad as the others she certainly spoke for England. A master in the art of avoiding the question and boring you with irrelavant details until you just wanted to die.
Finally Nick Blessing a student at Birmingham City University who was actually someone I found myself liking and agreeing with. I feel he did a better job then all the Mp's put together but hey if there's ever a non-slime ball elected into parliment let me know.
Well the meeting commenced with some well thought-out if not predictable questions by the 'grammer school kids' With the air and tone they were taking I half expected them to come up with something worthy of them blowing me away but yet everyone tread lightly against the issues that need to be tackled. The issues that we as young adults need to show the government we care about. These issues well they didn't pop up why would they when your playing for prizes and you need to sweeten up the only party that is their i.e the tories. The questions were not in the slightest answered rather used as a buiding block to promote that person's political party as well as totally go off subject. Not to be rude to anyone but i found some of the questions dull lifeless and totally non-shocking. I mean my view is you have some people with 'power' here go give them a bloody good kicking to make sure they take us seriously. To be fair there were a few questions which provoked a explosive reaction resulting in me having to be restrained from jumping across the table as i was going to attack someone with a fantastic question ( ya not really but it was a very clever question indeed) who was acting like a pompus aroggant git.
Blah blah blah people asked questions were answered with some input from Patrick Burns and then time was called.
The question time was started again with a brief re-cap of the questions (yawn) and 'brief' answers from the new conservative Mp who joined us Caronline Spelman. ( Amateur dramatics come free of charge) The question time was announced again and yet more q+a's were done until the question 'Are the tories really just Labour in blue?' popped up. The response from Caroline Spelman was sickening. A whole hearted denial they were anything like Labour as Labour were the big baddies trying to take away homes and jobs and blah ( Conservatives can talk. Think Thatcher) I who had stuck my hand up a few times to ask a question was finally given a bit of time to talk even then with a 'let's brush lightly on this until we move on' This angered me no one else was dismissded in such a manner. I was annoyed throughtout the whole thing i expected a fun passion filled debate i got nothing of the sort. I expected us to be chosen at least more then once to ask a question but no. I expected for us young adults to be taken seriously by the MP's. Ha. I was fuming about the fact i was disrespected in such a manner that it couldn't be seen as outright but rather insitusionlised. I expected myself to make a simple comment about the tories instead i let it all out in the form of
' The conversatives always seem to be in the media especially David Cameroin who is always on some charade or the other. He likes to portray himself as eco friendly- and rides a bike to work wit a limousine follwing behind him. It's obious that the conservatives will drop their priniciples like a stone if the public don't like it JUST to get more votes. They just change their views to suit the current political climate and have no real views or principles but change to get more votes. They are pathetic( or something) This explosion of passion gained a momentary silence and then a big round of applause with cheering, which i was very proud of. However que Calorine Spelman who looked shocked at the fact she was challenged in such a way. After some time of thinking baout how to respond she thought the ameatuer dramatics was the best way to respond. She launched into a tirade of how all parties need to change ( ya but not their very ideals) she then teared a paper in a fit of emtoion which propmeted a resound ooo and talked about soeting totally irrlavant. How tory like. Unlike other people who were given a chance to respond Patrick Burns moved on swiftly. Possibly for fear of offending the tories. And then continued question time until prizes were handed out.
Nxt blog is coming up this is too long where i will explain my new found 'hatred' for conservatives Patrick Burns and racism.
